  3) EFFECTIVE GROUP/CAPACITY BUILDING

Why Bother?

One of the best motivations for developing the capacity of the community group is the avoidance of dependency on just a few individuals or on the community builder. In an ideal world community builders could work behind the scenes and never step up front at a community meeting and simply be an organizing support system for a wide variety of resident leaders in town. The community group becomes healthy and sustains itself and is not dependent on an outsider for direction, support or validation. The more capacity for improving the community that the group develops, the more sustainable the community will be.

The Situation:

The same group of 'five' individuals in the inner circle seems to be in charge of everything. They complain that nobody wants to get involved but never let anyone else help. Nobody is learning skills for community betterment strategies.

Should you:

(A) Do nothing and wait for the inner circle to burn out.

(B) Let the 'five' individuals to be mentors for the community and use a process like 'use each one teach one' method.

(C) Organize a committee or form a sub group structure to reduce the monopoly.
